You remember a spat you had with M and wonder why it came to that. At cross-purposes, I guess. Then again, this seems to be a recurrent theme: your remarkable ability to piss people off.
Maybe not gender-specific since old K. K. got a real blasting as well. In both instances you suspect there's an underlying presumption that a Muslim has to, simply has to, have regressive views. But something said was quite revealing, beyond that: why did I use the word "he", never "she"; or mankind instead of humankind or womankind. Why was that? Is there some deep-rooted prejudice that men harbour against women? Given the levels of violence, the types of violence-Congo, Bosnia, Gujarat etc.- you'd have to say there's something to that-unless you want to ignore the record. That it's more than that: there's a savage misogyny as well.
The main theme. Of course. But something else as well; about how things are destined to break, about how fragile and tenuous the bonds that link one life to another, stranger to stranger, really are. The small, comforting curvatures in life that we seek and find; curvature as the primal symbol of our humanity, our generosity, our refuge...Goodness doesn't last. That most enigmatic of words in the English language: good. Good for nothing; good grief.
'Our habits are so familiar ; they're like the interiors of uncurtained houses at night, a reassuring wedge of known lamplight, a corner of a familiar ceiling cornice, a wall of books, the top of a wing chair, always there, the same arrangements.'
Ramzan in summer once again. You can't but help think of the last time. Ten days back each year so that makes 30-odd years. And you instinctively think of the next time it will come around. Where everyone will be. The stars quietly ticking on, too vast and too small to be of interest. We mimic their indifference.

your remarkable ability to piss people off -
but i remember you never accepted this, you said it was not true that you pissed people off. have you come to see clearer now? :-P
(i can't really say, you know, not knowing you in real life. though from this blog's tradition, it would seem so, i think, hmmm)
:-)
yes, it probably is true in real life as well. I'd like to believe that it's mainly people higher up in the food chain since I *do* have a problem with authority. and that is, I think, partly down to the way my parents brought me up.
But yes, maybe it's something more general (strange, was just having this discussion with my family yesterday).
Not sure if the internet can be taken as an example, though, coz:
1) there are some mighty strange ppl on the net.
2) the format isn't the best one for discussions.
In the specific cases we're talking about i still think that KK and M were out of order. One started talking about "your people" (the type of generalizations racists usually employ)and M was just a touch extreme (in my opinion). As for anton, I have to admit: yes, I was in the wrong. Which leaves you, my most faithful reader. so far so good? Er...
:-)
it's not like we haven't had our own disagreement rantings in the past, which i am sure you blame on my being a hot-tempered southern girl :-P
but, yes, very faithful, that is me (in some respects)
now quitting joking, it's not up to me to 'judge' incidents like those you mention, and i will abstain from commenting that. as i said, i am not sure either that one can use the internet-format as a criteria, without a knowledge of the person in real life, one cannot tell, at least i cannot tell for sure...
err..yes, now that you put it like that maybe i am a bit quarrelsome!
:-)
Me. blame you? perish the thought! :-)
putting on my very serious hat: i think disagreements and spats, even, are about par for the course. Just think they're more likely if we don't see the other person's face or hear their voice, or don't pick up the tone of what's being said. which is really what you're saying (i think) about the importance of real life context.
I can't even remember what we argued about. something silly about oscar wilde wasn't it? and yes, it probably was me who made a very hasty point or maybe i was being judgemental. can't remember to be honest. not trying to be funny, seriously can't.
but if you were in the wrong, I forgive you.
joking, joking already! ;-)
jees, you southerners!
er,...have i dug myself in deeper here. where's the delete button again...
