On the road again, in-between places...looking for familiar voices, people, places...the anchors of the world when there are no anchors...the great greying tree outside the window, the tree stump in the park from which little r would deliver her lectures on what's wrong with the world; the rickety old bridge across the Roding, behind the Baptist Church, where a black dog licked little r's cheek ("why did he do that?"). The music in our lives, each note strikes then falls...finds home, leaves home.
The flailing marriages, the old ones less fluent, gasping at the loss of words, the middle-aged friends at a crossroads, the mystery...how did we end up here?! the young ones blissfully innocent of history, enraptured by the latest computer game.
