Growing up in what was to all effect an all-white community you always had the sneaking suspicion that white people weren't that cool (part of that was, no doubt, down to the racism you experienced). But part of it was, you'd like to think, that your cousins and the dougal had a stack of LPs that no-one had really heard of and whose sound was, how to say this, soulful, unpretentious, more real than all the other stuff on the radio and television (Otis, B.B., Marvin, Toots, Aretha, Sam & Dave, Marley).
