Time and the other

 'The western conception of the person as a bounded, unique, more or less integrated motivational and cognitive universe, a dynamic center of awareness, emotion, judgment, and action organized into a distinctive whole and set contrastively both against other such wholes and against a asocial and natural background is, however incorrigible it may seem to us, a rather peculiar idea within the context of the world's cultures.'

---C. Geertz.

~~~
The strangeness of the frontier, where the past is an utter blank, a dark room devoid of any memories or mirrors. One can only look forward and see time hurtling towards one. In the evening of the heart even a small light looks like a sun.
Read this book and be amazed. it is to the shame of contemporary politicians that they don't read history. Or even,we learn today, literature, since the current Minister for Education in these 'ere British Isles today announced on Radio 4 that he had never read a word of Dickens.
O.K. And you? Listening to L'Arpeggiata and, especially, Philippe Jaroussky. This is them doing their South American, Piazzola-inspired performance! http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_11?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=los+pajaros+perdidos&sprefi
Perfect pick-me up for a dull day...
But also get Jaroussky singing Vivaldi - 'music to die for...'
Yes, I'm good (gosh, that amricanism sounds so awful! :-))
so, so..let me quickly modify it to...good-ish.
Busy term this one. Just came back from a trip to sunny Qatar. Very relaxing (lovely swimming pool..yeah, I know, the life of a failed academic is a tough one, isn't it? :-)))
But the paper went well. Wrote something on 'future generations'. Will try and post bits on the blog if you're interested. Still need to work on it though.
Apart from that, same old, same old. Oh yeah, I've had a son by the way! Very quiet chap. completely dominated by the little devil ('r') who wants him to go back into mummy's tummy.
How people brought up six or seven children in the old days I'll never know!
Gotta run. class in 30 minutes.
will write a proper e-mail soon.
ciao,
b.
