defences

“Penguins have stood for the idea that our potentialities are greater than the pressures of our time”.

--R. Hoggart.

A defence against what, precisely? What can you keep out? Who hasn't reached middle age and thought to themselves: the world is an increasingly superficial place?

One world. The global village and all that baqwas about being "connected". The real connections flow depending on whether you have capital or not.

For most people in the world there is only the standing for their own survival. To be a human, the way a cloud's a cloud.

G. Monbiot has an interesting (and frightening) statistic: given soil erosion the world has perhaps only 60 more harvests to go (this stat. comes from the FAO!).
