late style

He has retreated to a point where he can see the world in an internal reflection, a very clear and penetrating simplification that he could never have achieved in the midst of the hurly-burly.

And no child shall have to cry
to make known what lies deep in their heart.

Antonia - I recommend Maggie Fergson's Life of GMB - she met him in his later years and wote, I think, a true and perceptive account of a complex and enigmatic man. Of course, you may already have read it!

C, of course! :-)

does look very interesting. thanks for the recommendation.

anton, yes, will certainly keep an eye out for Stoner-though it's very hard to find good books here.

Can't help thinking what a charmed life this is: books, music, films, good food..and what an incredible struggle it is for most people.

Take care, both of you.
