Now and then (more now than then) you're made aware of just how superficial this blog is. And the difficulty of facing the fact that this stems from the superficiality of your life. For this you must be grateful...
The one thing necessary, the one thing needful. By temperament (or, more generously, by chance) you've never been able to fix on one thing or stick in one place (are these two somehow related?). There has never been any depth of understanding, just a mish-mash of quotes and partial inquiries or second-hand, derivative and fragmentary sentences that do not form a narrative, do not fit into a whole.
To know one thing well, to have some sort of skill eludes you (a failure of intelligence or the will?). [Don't overdo this and lose it]. The options, both untenable: the life of the mind (it's hard to say that with a straight face), or religion both struck you as too narrow or one-sided for your cut & paste, frivolous attitude. You put on a tall hat and thought you would be serious, "deep", even. You could blame the times and say that living in a society that was increasingly becoming narrow and rigid such laxity was the only kind of pluralism you could genuinely muster or you could always blame it on coming from a long line of jokers..
Why seem anything?
You read anton or Tom's blog and see what is real and wonder...

Chatwin and G. Dyer: did they get away with so much because of their looks, because they looked the part? But there it is again, that second-hand, roaming and light of touch intelligence that appears to be interested in everything but that may, ultimately, only be a reflection of a narcissistic soul, a self that only cares about surfaces and mirrors?
