If the world is one, then everything is connected. Which means if something existed long ago then its trace can still be found, somewhere, today. Styles of reasoning, ways of thinking, approaches to life go out of fashion, fall by the wayside, but at the same time the old questions never really disappear. Much of what we think or question was once thought by someone else. This smile, that gesture of the hand...how so very ancient! What was beautiful folds in on itself and is only glimpsed on the margin, survives on a brightly-lit edge.

We are always displaced, never truly in the shoes we're in..even our shadow slants away at an angle. You sometimes wonder if the face you had at the beginning isn't carried though. just the way the cards were dealt. The past and the future don't just exist now. Make of that what you will.

Everything that is exists separately, in its own small space of light. That, too, is an old thought. A name is not just a name is not just a name.

Why does an empty road feel familiar? Abandoned cities, rooms with the blinds drawn, full of light and uninhabited. The last meal set on the table, the whispers of former conversations held still in the walls, all the lives in the house condensed now to a fragment against the wide, open time that now hardly ticks over, inching its way forward like an eternal Sunday afternoon (can there be time without a witness?). What was that?

Find your place in the sun, get it reserved now for a discount. That nice square of green shade the only bit of real land left. To reach the stage of mid-life is to be a statue: fully formed, but the wind whistling off your shoulders, time blowing through you, your mind straying, memory threadbare, a flash of insight..what you remember anyhow is a feeling, not a word and feeling is a thread that binds it all, loosely, as if memory works, could only work, on the outlines of all that was given it, or at best on the elemental, the core fundamental, discarding the rest for the thin vertical structure that remains.

D said, you must remember, it can all go wrong at any time. No-one knows.
