now and then
" I paint people not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they happen to be."
---Sebastian Smee on Lucian Freud.
The Platonist might think "there is no whiteness so white as the memory of whiteness", as the memory of lost whiteness, but such is not really the case. The eternal's love of time; the eternal one's love of the particular one...he bears his fate like an old infidel, waiting for it to crack.
Lights turned down. The wisp of the low blue flame. The slow understanding within bounds, circling, retracing. The inevitable drift to the South, your name like a ray of sunshine amidst the world. Silence, followed by speech. Now and then.
The same. The same.
then once, in a flash,
fresh ground,...
black, grey, green, and blue
water, stone, grass and sky
and each unique set stone!
---Robert Lowell.

hi b
from my blue south, a memory, dazzling memory, of a white room, eternal one...
hello, Roxana.
Gosh, that's spooky..that sounds just like me..great parody..er..are you making fun of me? :-0
btw, someone recently told me that :-) is not the same as :-0. i.e they mean different things. I wonder if this is a universal language or if there are different cultural interpretations? :-0, for instance...does the open mouth mean 'surprise'? or is it someone laughing? what?
Keep well,
b.
why fun of you? do you think you are the only owner of all white rooms and memories thereof in the world? :-)
of course :-) is not the same as :-0, differences, my old friend, differences!
:-0 is baffled, i would say.
yes, you *would* say that roxana!
And I would say it is something else.
But it must be awful for this person, constantly baffled, always surprised. how can he/she close her mouth to swallow food, for example?
why fun of me...oh, i dunno, becasue it pleases you, i guess!
:-0
gotta run..class. not prepared. help!
Like that
Plato would suggest the form of The White.
Which is different to white.
Bravo,good interesting post.
Thank you Ian for your kind comments. I'm afraid-and roxana will confirm this-that I'm a bit of a fraud and just take random quotes without really understanding them.
but yes, I think you're right..the remembering of the Form of White...the white that is an imperfect copy of it. But it is the imperfect white one is after, no?
Khair...
thanks for dropping by.
Salaams,
b.
